When Anthony Shaw's plane was shot down over France during the Second World War, he parachuted safely to the ground -but was soon captured by the Germans. His immediate thought was to escape and, incredibly, he managed this twice. The first time he worked himself free and jumped from a convoy, but unluckily was recaptured. The second time he persuaded his guards (who had been ordered to shoot him) to help him - and escape with him. He was also helped by brave French villagers and to this day he has remained in touch with his rescuers of both nationalities, and visited them all.
But this is just one of the many extraordinary stories that Commander Shaw tells in this fascinating autobiography. Even after the war his adventures continued, first when he travelled the world as a King's Messenger, then when he became an experimental test pilot on fixed-wing aircraft and, later, on helicopters, once facing a court martial rather than risk man and machine. His naval career ended with a flourish, too, when he was posted to newly independent Sierra Leone as Defence Adviser - leading, of course, to fresh adventures.
'I lay down in the thickest bush I could find. A party of soldiers passed so close that, had I stretched out an arm, I could have tripped them, but they did not see me. This encouraged me to hope that I might avoid capture. Before long, however, I heard them returning. This time they found me, and a general clamour rose round my bush. I lifted my head and found myself the aiming point of half a dozen rifles and surrounded by double that number of men. I carefully raised my hands above my head before I got up.'
