The author paints a vivid picture of his wartime service on the lower deck of HMS Cornwall, describing the cruiser's destruction of the German commerce raider Pinguin, and gives a graphic account of Cornwall's final battle when she was attacked by some fifty Japanese dive-bombers and sunk in the Indian Ocean with the loss of over 230 men. The cruiser HMS Cornwall in company with her sister Dorsetshire were sunk by Japanese dive bombers in 1942 while on their way from Colombo to rendezvous with Somerville's fleet. The Navy was still reeling from the loss of Prince of Wales and Repulse by the same enemy only a few months before. The author served in Cornwall and recalls her wartime career and describes life on the Lower Deck of the cruiser. She had played a significant role in the war against Germany, and took part in the sinking of the German raider HK33 better known as the Pinguin. The author had joined the Navy as an ordinary seaman and after being wounded and surviving the sinking of Cornwall, he went on to gain a commission and served as a lieutenant in Naval Intelligence until the end of the war.
